GP6 - How to read guitar tabs

You are discovering the guitar and do not know how to read guitar tabs?
Nothing is easier!

Tabs or tablature is the alternative to classic standard sheet music.

Tabs show you where to put your fingers over your guitar neck.

A tab is usually written using six horizontal lines, each corresponding with a string on the guitar. The bottom line represents the lowest, thickest string, while the top string represents the highest, thinnest string.

On these 6 lines you will notice numbers, these numbers show you which fret you have to select on your guitar neck.

Basic principles :

  • The bottom line represents the lowest, thickest string. Picture you watching your guitar from above.
  • Read your tab from left to right.
  • Stacked notes have to be played simultaneously.

The rhythm and the eight of a note are usually displayed in the standard notation.

Have fun!
